Mahashivratri, celebrated in 2025, is a sacred festival dedicated to Lord Shiva. One of the most important offerings during the puja is Bilvapatra (Bel leaves), which holds great spiritual significance. However, there are specific rules to follow while offering Bilvapatra on the Shivling to ensure the puja is successful.

Rules for Offering Bilvapatra on Shivling

Use Only Fresh Bilvapatra

  • Always offer clean and undamaged Bilvapatra.
  • Leaves with holes or tears should not be used in puja.

Writing 'ॐ' on Bilvapatra

  • Some devotees write ‘ॐ’ (Om) or Lord Shiva’s name on the leaves before offering them.
  • This enhances the spiritual significance of the offering.

Offering the Right Side of the Leaf

  • The smooth side of Bilvapatra should face the Shivling, while the veins should be on top.

Reusing Bilvapatra

  • Bilvapatra that has already been offered to Shiva can be reused, as it is believed to remain pure.
  • However, it should be washed properly before re-offering.

Avoid Plucking Bilvapatra on Certain Days

  • Bilvapatra should not be plucked on Amavasya (New Moon) or Sankranti.
  • If needed, it should be collected a day before.
