New Delhi. The Modi government, which has been engaged in strengthening transport connectivity through waterways in India in the last two terms, has taken a major decision at the beginning of this term. In the cabinet meeting, the government has approved the construction of an all-weather greenfield port in Vadhavan, Maharashtra.

Wadhawan Port will be constructed by Wadhawan Port Project Limited

The government has claimed that this port will be among the top 10 ports in the world. The construction of this port will cost Rs 76,200 crore. This port will play an important role in economic activities. More than 10 lakh employment opportunities will be created through this.

Land acquisition is also included in the total cost.

For this, a SPV of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and Maharashtra Maritime Board has been formed. They will be shareholders of 74 percent and 26 percent respectively. The total cost of Rs 76,200 crore also includes land acquisition. The main infrastructure, terminals, commercial infrastructure etc. will be developed on PPP mode.

The cabinet has also approved road connectivity from the National Highway and rail network link to this port through Dedicated Rail Freight Corridor. The government has informed that nine container terminals of 1000 meters each will be built at this port having a capacity of 298 million metric tonnes.

One million employment opportunities will be created

This port will also prove to be helpful in trade through India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor and International North South Transportation Corridor. The government hopes that after the construction of this port, which is included in the PM Gatishakti program, one million employment opportunities will be created directly or indirectly.
