
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is often regarded as a stronghold of the Left, but JNU Vice Chancellor Dr. Shantishree Pandit believes that Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is even more leftist, though it is less visible.
Speaking at the Vasudev Balwant Phadke Memorial Lecture Series, organized by the Maharashtra Education Society on Thursday, she shared insights into her experiences at Pune University and JNU.
"If I Can Work in Pune University, I Can Work Anywhere"
Dr. Shantishree Pandit was a professor at SPPU’s Department of Politics and Public Administration before joining JNU in 2022.
She credited her experience at Pune University for helping her navigate the complexities of running JNU.
Addressing a question about how she efficiently manages JNU, she responded:
"It is all because of the work and training I received at SPPU."
She also remarked:
"After working in Pune University, one can work anywhere."
Shantishree on Religious Studies in Universities
- When asked why Maharashtra lacks courses based on religious beliefs, she explained that JNU has dedicated centers for Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain studies.
- She highlighted JNU’s Centre for Hindu Studies, Centre for Buddhist Studies, and Centre for Jain Studies, emphasizing the importance of academic research on religion and philosophy.
