The Government of India has released the first installment of aid to Palestinian refugees for the year 2024-25. The government has released the first installment of US $ 2.5 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). Amid the ongoing protests in Gaza, India will help Palestine with US $ 5 million this year.
India sent financial aid to refugees
"The Government of India has released the first tranche of US$ 2.5 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) as part of its annual contribution of US$ 5 million for the year 2024-25," India's Representative Office in Ramallah said in a statement on X.
India has assisted with US $ 35 million
Over the past few years, in its effort to support Palestinian refugees and their welfare, India has provided financial assistance of US$35 million till 2023-24 for the UN agency’s core programs and services, including education, healthcare, relief and social services provided to Palestinian refugees.
During the recent UNRWA Pledging Conference held in New York, India announced that in addition to financial support, it would also provide medicines to UNRWA based on the specific request of the agency, and reiterated its call for safe, timely and sustained supply of humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions from UN Member States.
