India on Thursday criticised developed nations for causing the climate crisis during a landmark hearing at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), saying they have tapped the global carbon budget and failed to honour climate-finance promises, even as they are now demanding that developing nations limit their use of resources.
It is noteworthy that the ICJ is investigating what legal obligations countries have to tackle climate change and what will be the consequences if they fail.
India also urged the ICJ to avoid creating new obligations beyond the existing climate-change framework. Arguing for India, Luther M Rangreji, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, said that due care may be taken to avoid creating new or additional obligations beyond those already agreed under the existing climate-change regime.
