The Waqf Amendment Bill has been approved by the President after being passed by both the houses of Parliament, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Now the Waqf Bill has become a law. However, opposition parties and Muslim organizations have filed a petition in the Supreme Court against this bill. Now the Supreme Court has fixed the date for hearing the petitions against the Waqf law. The Supreme Court will hear the petitions against the Waqf law on the coming date of 16 April.

Central government filed caveat

On the other hand, the Central Government has also filed a caveat in the Supreme Court regarding the matter of Wakf law. It has been said in the caveat petition that the Supreme Court should not pass any unilateral order without hearing the Central Government. The court should also hear the arguments of the Central Government before passing any order.

Who all filed the petition?

More than 10 petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court so far challenging the Waqf Act. Those who filed the petition include DMK, Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi, Asaduddin Owaisi, Congress MP Mohammad Javed, AIMPLB, Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, etc. Let us tell you that the bench of Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna, Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice KV Vishwanathan has agreed to consider the petitions against the Waqf Act by listing them for immediate hearing.

How did voting take place in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha?

President Draupadi Murmu approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 on 5 April. This bill was passed after a late night debate in both the houses of Parliament, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. In the voting on the Waqf Bill, 128 members in Rajya Sabha voted in favor of the Waqf Bill and 95 members voted against it. At the same time, 288 members in Lok Sabha supported the Waqf Bill while 232 voted against it.
