Like the corona epidemic, there is news of another viral infection spreading in China. Many reports have claimed that cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) are increasing in China. Social media has claimed that the virus is spreading rapidly, hospitals and crematoriums are full. Videos shared online show overcrowded hospitals, with some users saying that several viruses are spreading, including influenza A, HMPV, mycoplasma pneumonia and COVID-19. However, China has completely rejected these claims.

Claims of an epidemic spreading in China have also raised concerns in India. However, the National Center for Disease Control says that there is no need for people in India to worry about this. The situation here is completely normal.

NCDC is in touch with international agencies

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is closely monitoring respiratory and seasonal influenza cases in the country, official sources said on Friday, and is in touch with international agencies in the wake of recent reports of a human metapneumovirus (hMPV) outbreak in China. "We will continue to monitor the situation closely and communicate accordingly and confirm any further developments," a senior official said.

No need to worry in India

Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr Atul Goel said human metapneumovirus is like any other respiratory virus that causes common cold, and it can cause flu-like symptoms in young and very old people. "There are reports about outbreak of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) in China. However, we have analysed the data of respiratory outbreak in the country (India) and there is no significant increase in the data for December 2024 and no large number of cases have been reported from any of our institutions. There is nothing to worry about the current situation," he said.

Follow simple methods to avoid cold - Dr. Goyal

"Anyway, there is an increase in respiratory infections during winters, for which our hospitals are usually prepared with necessary supplies and beds," Dr Goyal said. He advised people to follow the usual precautions used to prevent respiratory infections, which means if someone has cough and cold, they should avoid coming in contact with others so that the infection does not spread. People should avoid coming in contact with others if they have cold and take common medicines for cold and fever, he said.
