HMPV Virus: In view of the increasing threat of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) and Seasonal Influenza in Uttarakhand, the Health Department has issued instructions to be vigilant. Preparations have been intensified in the state hospitals. Along with ensuring the availability of medicines for the treatment of patients, the work of checking and repairing necessary medical equipment has started. Apart from this, special beds have been reserved in hospitals so that treatment can be started immediately if needed.

The health department has instructed hospitals to keep IV injections, fluids and other essential medical supplies ready. CMO Dr. Harish Pant said that 100 beds have been reserved in Nainital-based Dr. Sushila Tiwari Hospital, BD Pandey Hospital and Haldwani Base Hospital. Two beds each have also been reserved in Community Health Centers (CHCs). The department has said that if the situation worsens, instructions will be issued to private hospitals to be prepared as well.

Facility for identification and testing of the virus
The Microbiology Department of the Medical College has ordered the necessary kits for testing HMPV as per the instructions of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Department Head Dr. Umesh said that the testing facility will be started soon. He said that HMPV infection is like a common cold and can be cured in three to five days, but the elderly, children and people suffering from serious diseases should take special precautions.

However, amid the preparations of the health department, cases of negligence are also coming to the fore. On Tuesday, patients were seen not following social distancing in the OPD of hospitals. Doctors have warned that in such a situation the infection can spread rapidly. They have appealed to the people to be careful and follow the instructions.

How to prevent infection?
Cover your nose and mouth with a mask while sneezing or coughing.
Avoid going to crowded places.
Wash hands regularly with soap and water.
Consume more fluids and nutritious food.
Contact a doctor immediately if you notice symptoms of cold, cough or fever.

Pay special attention to cleanliness.
Base Hospital PMS Dr. KK Pandey said that there is adequate arrangement of medicines and injections in the hospital. All arrangements have been made in case of admission of patients. The Health Department has instructed the hospitals to immediately inform the CMO office about any infection. Experts say that awareness is very important to avoid HMPV and seasonal influenza. Maintaining proper distance from the infected person, personal hygiene and use of mask reduces the chances of spreading the infection. The Health Department has appealed to the public not to panic, but to be cautious. All necessary steps are being taken to prevent the outbreak of the virus.
