UP Liquor Shop Time on New Year: People in the entire country including Uttar Pradesh are eagerly waiting for 'Christmas' and 'New Year'. People have already started planning for the celebration of these two special festivals. The reason for this is that while there are only 10 days left for the festival of 'Christmas', on the other hand, there is about two weeks left for the year 2025 to begin.
To make the festivals of 'Christmas' and 'New Year' more memorable, the Uttar Pradesh government has made a big announcement. The UP Excise Department has decided to extend the closing time of liquor shops on both these festivals. In this regard, the Secretary of the State Excise Department, Dr. Adarsh Singh has also issued a notification.
Liquor shops will remain open for one more hour.
In the order issued, instructions have been given to increase the time for purchase of liquor at all retail shops of excise on special festivals. The Excise Department has given this order in the interest of revenue. Under this, liquor shops will remain open till 11 pm on 24 December and 25 December, a day before the celebration of Christmas.
Liquor shops will remain open till 11 pm on December 31 too
Similarly, on the special occasion of New Year, liquor shops will remain open till 11 pm on December 31. Till now, the closing time of liquor shops is 10 pm. The order states that on the occasion of Christmas and New Year, liquor shops will remain open from 10 am to 11 pm, that is, liquor shops will remain open for one hour more than before.
The intention is to earn big revenue
According to the news published in The Hindu, in the year 2023, there was a 20 percent increase in the sale of liquor across the country on Christmas and New Year. In Ghaziabad alone, 14 percent more liquor business was done in 2023 as compared to 2022. In Ghaziabad, liquor worth Rs 12.5 crore was sold on New Year between 31 December 2024 and 1 January 2024. Similarly, in Noida, a revenue of Rs 14.8 crore was received from liquor on this occasion.
In the recent years, Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a hub for liquor lovers. The Yogi government has increased the closing time of liquor shops by one hour to capitalize on the Christmas and New Year celebrations. The reason for this is that in the financial year 2023, the Uttar Pradesh government earned a revenue of Rs 42 thousand 250 crores from the sale of liquor alone, which was only Rs 14 thousand crores in 2017-18, when the Yogi government was formed in UP.
