What is eye strain?

Eye strain occurs when the eyes have to remain in the same position for a long period of time, such as when looking at a computer screen or reading a book. This strains the eye muscles and forces the tear glands to produce fewer tears. This dries out the surface of the eyes and causes irritation, pain and fatigue.

What are the symptoms of eye strain?

  • Dryness and irritation in the eyes
  • Fatigue and pain in the eyes
  • blurred or double vision
  • Headache
  • Itching in the eyes
  • Light Sensitivity

Tips to avoid eye strain

  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule- After every 20 minutes of screen time, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This helps relax the eyes and reduce strain.
  • Rest your eyes- Take regular breaks to rest your eyes. You can close your eyes and relax for a few minutes or do some eye exercises.
  • Provide adequate moisture to the eyes- Use eye drops regularly to prevent the eyes from drying . Do not forget to consult a doctor for this.
  • Keep the screen light right- Keep the light of the computer or phone screen right, so that there is less strain on the eyes. Too much or too little screen light can cause eye strain.
  • Work in light- Make sure that your work place has the right amount of light. Looking at the phone etc. in the dark puts pressure on the eyes and can cause eye strain.
  • Do eye exercises- Regular eye exercises strengthen the muscles and help in reducing eye strain.
  • Wear the right glasses or lenses- If you wear glasses or contact lenses , get your eyes checked from time to time and wear lenses of the correct number. Also, you can use glasses with blue lenses. This will reduce eye strain.
