The movement that started against reservation in Bangladesh has taken a violent turn. This movement has completely changed the politics of Bangladesh. Meanwhile, in view of the news of increasing atrocities against religious and ethnic minorities in Bangladesh, a coalition of Bangladeshi American Hindus, Buddhists and Christians has sent a memorandum to the newly elected President of America, Donald Trump.
The group has urged Donald Trump to intervene and help protect minority communities in the country. The group also urged Trump to ensure the immediate release of Sant Chinmay Krishna Das. They say that Krishna Das has been wrongly arrested on charges of treason.
'There is a danger of Bangladesh moving towards radicalism'
The group further said that Bangladesh is in danger of moving towards radicalism, which can have far reaching consequences not only on South Asia but the entire world.
Das, a former ISKCON leader, was arrested at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on November 25. A Chattogram court rejected his bail plea and sent him to jail as he was charged with sedition for insulting the country's flag. The hearing in the case will be held on January 2, 2025.
Minority Protection Act is also proposed in the memorandum
In a memorandum addressed to Trump, the group also suggested linking Bangladesh's participation in UN peacekeeping missions to the end of internal ethnic and religious persecution. The memorandum also proposes a comprehensive Minority Protection Act to officially recognise minorities and indigenous groups.
Besides, they have demanded the establishment of security zones, provision of separate electorates for minorities and stringent laws against hate crimes and hate speech to protect religious and cultural heritage.
