News Topical, Digital Desk : Villagers affected by the Arjun Auxiliary Project in Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh, have now decided to launch a movement. As part of this, the Bharatiya Haldhar Kisan Union has launched a protest at the district headquarters. The villagers have demanded that their entire area be submerged due to the dam, and therefore, the entire area should be declared a flood zone. Furthermore, the villagers have warned that if a solution is not found within seven days, they will go on a hunger strike
The union also sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister outlining its demands. They demanded that the administration change the submergence area declared by the administration and take a decision based on the villagers' situation. The villagers raised slogans at the Collectorate.
15% area declared as submerged area
Janak Singh Parihar, district president of the Bharatiya Haldhar Kisan Union, explained that the Ganj village issue is linked to the Arjun Auxiliary Project and the Kabrai Dam, which has threatened the village's existence. He added that due to the dam's increased water storage capacity, approximately 85 percent of the village's agricultural land has already been submerged. Three previous surveys had declared the entire village a submergence area, which prevented the villagers from undertaking any new construction. However, the department is now backtracking. Currently, only 15 percent of the area is considered submergence, which is a gross injustice to the farmers.
Farmers face livelihood crisis
Moreover, Janak Singh Parihar launched a scathing attack on the administration, saying that it is in a deep slumber. He clarified that when farmers have no land left to farm, how will they feed their children? The department is also suppressing information requested under the Right to Information Act. Now, the situation is such that even women are forced to take to the streets to fight for their rights.
In this memorandum sent to the Chief Minister, Governor, and Water Power Minister, the farmers have declared a fight to the finish. Their clear demand is that the entire Ganj village be declared a submergence area and that appropriate compensation be provided. They have warned that if the district administration does not take concrete action within the next seven days, the Bharatiya Haldhar Kisan Union will launch an indefinite sit-in and hunger strike at the district collectorate premises. The farmers have made it clear that, with the slogan "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan," they will fight for their rights until their last breath, for which the district administration will be solely responsible.
