New Delhi: Republican leader Donald Trump, who has again taken over the post of US President, will not have to wait long to come to India this time. The upcoming meeting of the top leaders of the Quad countries (organization of America, Australia, Japan and India) is to be held in India.
Trump can make a record
India has not decided the date of this summit but it has been told earlier that the date of the summit can possibly be fixed in July-August, 2025. If everything goes well, this will be the first time that an American President has visited India within the first year of assuming the presidency. If Trump comes to India in the first year of assuming power, he can become the first President to do so.
US Presidents' Visits to India
During the Cold War era (1950s to 1990s), rarely did any US President visit India, but all the five US Presidents have visited India in the last five years. Recently, in September 2023, US President Joe Biden came to New Delhi to attend the G-20 summit. However, Biden has not been able to visit India on a bilateral official visit.
India-US relations
Trump visited India in 2020, the last year of his first term. PM Modi met Trump three times in his last term and each meeting proved to be a milestone in terms of India-US relations. The first meeting between the two took place in June 2017. Trump, who became President a few months ago, invited Modi to dinner at the White House.
Modi became the first global leader to have dinner at the White House during Trump's tenure. In the joint statement issued after the meeting of the two leaders, India and the US used very strong words against all forms of terrorism, including cross-border terrorism, and Pakistan was directly warned.
Trump said that India and America have never had such strong relations before. A few months later, an agreement was reached to start two-plus-two talks between America and India. The second meeting between the two took place during the Howdy Modi program organized by Modi in Houston. This was the biggest event organized to welcome a foreign leader on American soil.
Modi's visit to America
Modi made this visit in August 2019, just a few weeks after the removal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. India was worried that the US and other western countries might say something bitter against this decision. This generally did not happen. Many people say that the slogan 'Abki Baar-Trump Sarkar' by PM Modi in Houston was only for diplomatic purposes.
Modi-Trump meeting
The third meeting between the two leaders took place in February 2020 in two phases, first in Ahmedabad and then in New Delhi. Trump and his family first reached Ahmedabad in PM Modi's home state Gujarat. There he was welcomed at the newly built Vishalkal Stadium. Nearly one lakh people were present in the stadium to welcome Trump. Trump, overwhelmed by this welcome, said that from today onwards India will always have a special place in my heart. The next day bilateral talks were held between the two leaders in New Delhi.
India-US strategy
It was stated in the joint statement that an agreement has been reached to give American military technologies to India. The Indo-Pacific region was also discussed in detail. For the first time, India and America talked about strategically changing the existing partnership regarding the Indo-Pacific region. This conversation has also taken place with the current President Joe Biden. There is a possibility of further acceleration in relations in the military and strategic field with Trump.
