Religious opinion is that by worshiping Lord Dhanvantari with a true heart , happiness, prosperity and well-being come to the house.   • On the day of Dhanteras, worship Lord Dhanvantari during the auspicious time.
  • Bring idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Ganesh made of gold, silver or clay.
  • Buying good things is considered auspicious.  
  • Donate to poor people.  
  • From this day till Bhai Dooj, lamps should be lit in the evening.
  • Buying broom, dried coriander and brass utensils is considered auspicious.
  • Do special cleaning of the house.
  • Apart from this, decorate the house with lights and other things.

 

What not to do on Dhanteras

 

  • Do not keep the house dirty. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi resides in a clean place.  
  • Do not keep wrong thoughts in your mind about anyone.
  • Do not say wrong things to anyone during a conversation.
  • Do not insult elders and women.
  • One should avoid buying inauspicious things on this day.
  • Avoid buying glass utensils, as it is considered to bring negativity.
  • Do not consume meat and alcohol.  
  • One should avoid eating tamasic things.  

Buying these things is auspicious

On the day of Dhanteras, buy auspicious things like gold or silver, idols of Lakshmi-Ganesh, utensils, broom, dry coriander etc. It is a religious belief that by bringing these things home, the blessings of Lord Dhanvantari and Mother Lakshmi always remain on the person. Also, one never has to face shortage of money in life.
