When and why is Dhanteras celebrated?
It is contained in the Sanatan scriptures that due to the mistake of Indra Dev in ancient times, heaven became devoid of Lakshmi. At that time, demons attacked heaven and took over. Then Lord Vishnu advised the gods to churn the ocean. The gods churned the ocean with the help of demons. 14 gems were obtained from the churning of the ocean. These include poison, Apsara Rambha, Airavat elephant, Kamdhenu cow. Along with this, Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, was also born. At the same time, Lord Dhanvantari, the father of Ayurveda, also appeared with a Kalash.
