STOCKHOLM: David Baker, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper were awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry Wednesday for their work on proteins. Baker works at the University of Washington, while Hassabis and Jumper both work at Google DeepMind in London. Hans Ellegren, secretary general of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, announced the Nobel prize.

New protein design

The Nobel Committee said that in 2003 Baker designed a new protein and since then his research group has created a series of imaginative protein constructions, including proteins that could be used as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, nanomaterials and tiny sensors.

AI model to explain protein structure

Hassabis and Jumper have created an artificial intelligence model capable of predicting the structure of 200 million proteins, the committee said. Last year, the chemistry prize was awarded to three scientists for their work on quantum dots.

Nobel Prize for Medicine

The announcement of the Nobel Prize 2024 winners began on October 7. On the first day, Americans Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine. They were given this award for the development of new technology related to machine learning.
