News Topical, Digital Desk : United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has advocated comprehensive structural reforms to increase the effectiveness of this global body. He has also presented a blueprint for reforms in the UN.

 

Guterres outlines sweeping reform plans

The UN chief outlined comprehensive reform plans to restructure the UN structure, including cost cutting, relocating services from high-cost sites, centralising information technology and support services, and expanding digital platforms.

 

Some changes will be painful for the UN family: Guterres

He said some of these changes would be painful for the UN family. In a briefing on the UN80 initiative in New York on Monday, Guterres said, “As I indicated in my letter of 11 March, the UN80 initiative is centered around three major workstreams.”

First, we are trying to rapidly identify efficiencies and improvements within the current arrangements. Second, we are reviewing the implementation of all the suggestions given to us by member countries. Third, we are considering the need for structural changes in the UN system.

 

Appeal for financial contribution for peace mission

UN Secretary-General Guterres told member states on Tuesday that the global body's peacekeeping mission is only as strong as member states' commitment to it.

 

He has appealed to countries to pay their financial contributions. UN-led peacekeeping missions are currently underway in 11 countries, including Congo, South Sudan, Lebanon and Cyprus.
