A 55-year-old man from the Meitei community, who worked in an army camp in Manipur, went missing. The man's disappearance led to tension in parts of Imphal West district bordering Kangpokpi on Tuesday. It is being said that the young man was missing for more than 24 hours.
Giving information about the case, the officials had said that Laishram Kamalbabu Singh, a resident of Loitang Khunou village in Imphal West, had left home on Monday afternoon to go to work at Limakhong military camp in Kangpokpi and has been missing since then. His mobile phone is also switched off. A joint search operation has been launched in the area by the police and central forces, a police officer of Kangpokpi district said.
Search operation launched
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said the central and state governments have launched a massive search operation in Jiribam and surrounding areas to nab those responsible for the recent incidents and the operation will continue till the culprits are booked.
Order to remove AFSPA from police station
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, the Chief Minister discussed the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Legislature Forum's decision to send a proposal to the Central government for implementation, which includes removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from six new police stations and transfer of police personnel.
Limakhong is located on the border of Kuki-dominated Kangpokpi and Meitei-dominated Imphal West. Following the incident, a large number of protesters, mostly women, took to the streets on Tuesday morning, blocking roads and demanding answers about his whereabouts.
Checking CCTV cameras
This incident can again lead to law and order situation. Meitei people were told not to block any road as it is hampering the search operation. The person is not seen coming out from anywhere in the CCTV camera, so police and army officials are checking the premises. Both the forces are again checking the CCTV cameras.
