A fifth-grade girl in Tamil Nadu's Madurai is training a bull for a jallikattu event during the Pongal festival next month. The girl, named Yazhini, has been working with the bull, named Nanban, for the past three years.

The passion for training Jallikattu bulls

Yazhini, a resident of Mangakulam village, studies at Crescent School. She comes from a farmer family, which is involved in animal husbandry. With the support of her parents, she developed a passion for training Jallikattu bulls. Yazhini said that this bull's name is Nanban (means friend) and I have been with him for the last five years. I treat him like an elder brother. When I go to him, he does not harm me and is always affectionate towards me.

What did Yazhini say?

"Before the Jallikattu event, we train him like swimming and walking practice. I stay with him during the Jallikattu competitions. When he comes out of the event's starting point, he plays aggressively. After that, he calmly comes back home with me," she said. Yazhini developed an interest in bull training from a very young age under the guidance of her father, as she would feed and water the bulls.

Meanwhile, Yazhini's father Sivanesan said that I have two bulls. Jallikattu is approaching, so I am training them. If I ever have to go out, my daughter takes care of the bulls. My bulls have participated in the previous Jallikattu competition and have won gold and silver coin prizes.
