Assam News: Two people of the Bengali Muslim community died in police firing on Thursday (September 12) near Guwahati, the capital of Assam. This incident happened when a crowd of illegal immigrants attacked government officials and policemen. During this, the police opened fire to disperse the crowd. In which two protesters died. While, 11 other protesters were also injured in this clash.
According to a report in Deccan Herald, the incident took place when a team from the Sonapur Zonal Office and police went to Kochutoli village in the district to vacate the land from Bengali-speaking Muslim villagers. The villagers had been removed from here earlier as well, but they returned here again. This land is reserved only for tribals.
Encroachers injured 22 policemen including women-DGP
On this matter, Assam DGP GP Singh said that the alleged encroachers have also injured 22 policemen including women. Police said that the deceased victims have been identified as (19) Zubahir Ali and (22) Haider Ali.
248 bigha government land was vacated
The DGP further said that during the eviction drive that began on Monday (September 9), 248 bighas of government land was vacated. Out of which 237 illegally constructed structures were removed by the officials. The eviction was done because the land is reserved for tribals. In which non-tribals are not allowed to occupy or buy that land.

Sources said many of those evicted from the land since (September 9) have returned and are living in temporary tents. "On Thursday (September 12), when officials went there and were asked to vacate the land, the mob followed them and attacked the officials with sticks and sharp-edged weapons. The police initially fired in the air but when the mob did not listen, the police had to open fire," an official said. Two of them died of bullet injuries in Sonapur hospital. Sonapur Revenue Division Officer Nitul Khatoniyar was also injured in the mob attack, the official said.
Strict action should be taken against those who attack government officials and police- DGP
DGP GP Singh said that the Guwahati police has been instructed to identify and take action against those who attacked government officials and the police. The officer said that this eviction was done under the instructions of the Assam government to vacate government and forest land from encroachers.
Bengali Muslims are being targeted
Meanwhile, those evicted in the anti-Muslim campaign say that this was a campaign targeting Bengali Muslims. Because, the BJP government had evicted many people belonging to the minority community in a similar way in the past, while Assamese people were not evicted from government land.
