New Delhi. Cargo Ship Fire: Three ships of the Indian Coast Guard are carrying out firefighting operations to douse the massive fire on the MV Maersk Frankfurt cargo ship. This ship was carrying a large quantity of dangerous cargo.
Let us tell you that this operation is being conducted by three ICG ships Sujit, Sachet and Samrat. On Friday, a cargo ship caught fire near Karwar in Karnataka. All three ships have been continuously trying to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading further for more than 12 hours.
Sujeet, Sachet and Samrat were on duty for 12 hours
In its latest update, the Indian Coast Guard said, 'Indian Coast Guard ships Sujeet, Sachet and Samrat have been trying to control the fire for more than 12 hours to prevent the fire from spreading. As of 7 am on July 20, ICG Dornier aircraft from Goa is conducting aerial assessment of the ship, and an additional aircraft from Kochi is deployed for search and rescue. ETV Water Lily departed from Mumbai on July 19 and reached the site by July 21.'
Operations underway to protect the crew
Late on Friday night, the Indian Coast Guard control room in Mumbai received information about a massive fire on board MV Maersk Frankfurt 50 nm from shore. ICG Dornier and ships Sachet, Sujeet and Samrat were immediately sent for action. An additional aircraft was also mobilised to enhance search and rescue efforts. Fire fighting operations are being carried out to prevent disaster and ensure the safety of the ship and crew, the Coast Guard said.
The ship has been advised to alter its course and is currently sailing on a course of 180 at a speed of 6 knots. However, south-westerly winds and strong waves are posing challenges in extinguishing the fire.
