News Topical, Digital Desk : Almost a year after the launch of the National Medical Register (NMR) for all allopathic doctors, only 996 out of 13.9 per cent allopathic doctors registered with the State Medical Councils have got NMR registration.

In response to an RTI, the National Medical Commission (NMC) said that of the 11,200 applications received for registration, 91% had not been approved as of August 8. The NMC’s NMR portal, launched with much fanfare by the Union health minister on August 23, 2024, for registration of all MBBS doctors eligible to practice in India, is yet to be launched.

NMR got appreciation but...

NMR was hailed as a step to strengthen the digital healthcare ecosystem, following which similar registers were to be launched for paramedics and other healthcare professionals. However, this register of doctors has not been prepared yet. Now it remains to be seen whether registers will be prepared soon for the estimated 35 lakh nurses and paramedics. Their number is estimated to be twice that of nurses.

What did the Health Ministry say?

In response to a question in Parliament, the Health Ministry said that 13.9 lakh MBBS doctors are registered with the State Council, out of which 80 percent doctors i.e. about 11 lakh doctors are estimated to be available. The NMC had issued the Registration of Physicians and Licensure to Practice Medicine Regulations, 2023 on June 8, 2023.

According to the regulations, the Board of Ethics and Medical Registration of the NMC will maintain the NMR, which will contain entries of all doctors in all state registers maintained by the State Medical Councils.
