News Topical, Digital Desk : The existence of the nearly three-century-old village of Mehram Nagar, near Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, is now in jeopardy. A notice issued by the National Security Guard (NSG) to vacate the village has sparked deep resentment and fear among the villagers. In response to this protest, a two-day Maha Panchayat began Saturday, with hundreds of people attending and voicing their opposition to the NSG and the government.
In fact, the NSG recently issued a notice giving the villagers an ultimatum to vacate the site by September 30th. However, the villagers say the Delhi High Court has currently stayed the notice. Despite this, the villagers feel insecure and believe their existence is under threat. In protest against this notice, posters and banners against the NSG have been put up at various locations.
'We have been living here for centuries'
Sonu Prajapati, a resident of the village, showed old maps and documents, claiming that Mehram Nagar has a 300-year history. According to him, documents from 1909 and earlier prove the village's existence. Prajapati says, "The NSG came here in 1986 and now claims it's their land. But the reality is that this village has been inhabited long before them."
Got support from 36 communities and 360 villages
Now, villagers are openly opposing this NSG notice and uniting against it. To strengthen the movement against the NSG notice, the heads of 36 surrounding communities and 360 villages also came out in support of Mehram Nagar. At a grand council meeting held on Saturday, the unanimous demand was that the NSG withdraw its order and save this historic village from destruction.
'I will die, but I will not leave my home'
The women of the village also actively participated in this struggle against the NSG. An elderly woman said, "This is their fifth generation living here. The NSG has just arrived, but they have been living here for centuries." She said, "They would rather lie down in front of the bulldozers than leave their homes."
The villagers say they will not leave their homes under any circumstances. The case is currently in court, and they hope to receive justice. However, an atmosphere of anger and fear prevails in the village, and the villagers have begun to unite in this fight against the NSG.
