New Delhi. Blood pressure or hypertension is the condition when the force of blood starts exerting more on the walls of the arteries, which causes many types of problems. These are measured by the parameters of diastolic and systolic. Normal blood pressure is considered to be 120/80.

Apart from genetic reasons, sometimes blood pressure increases due to some of our habits, such as sedentary lifestyle, obesity, high sodium intake or alcohol consumption. We can also control our blood pressure by controlling some of our habits. Let us know which habits can control blood pressure

Keep your weight under control

Overweight or obese people have a higher risk of developing high blood pressure. Losing even 5 to 10% of your excess weight can make a significant difference in blood pressure.

Exercise regularly

Regular exercise every day reduces blood pressure. It improves cardiovascular health. Aim to do at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise a day such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming, etc. Such exercise increases nitric oxide levels. Nitric oxide increases blood flow and lowers blood pressure.

Take supplements

Supplements such as magnesium, potassium, vitamin D and folic acid reduce blood pressure. Although doctors do not prescribe supplements in the daily routine, they may prescribe supplements in special circumstances.

Do not consume caffeine and alcohol

These are rich in sugar and calories, which can lead to obesity and then hypertension. This can also cause atherosclerosis i.e. narrowing of arteries, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. The American Heart Association recommends reducing alcohol consumption to reduce blood pressure.

Get enough sleep

Getting normal sleep keeps blood pressure balanced. Not getting enough sleep keeps blood pressure high, which increases the risk of stroke. Good sleep controls stress hormones like cortisol and hence keeps blood pressure under control.
