News Topical, Digital Desk : In today's hectic life, people do not even care about their health. After a busy day's schedule, when a person comes home tired, he sees nothing but bed. It is said that sleep is very important to give rest to the body. But do you know that this time can sometimes be the most dangerous for the heart?

Especially for those who already have a heart disease. You must have often heard that someone had a heart attack while sleeping and died immediately. We spoke to Dr. Sanjeev Kumar (Senior Consultant, Interventional Cardiology, Metro Hospital and Cancer Institute, New Delhi) about this. He said that the risk of heart problems, especially conditions like heart failure, increases during sleep and there are many reasons for this.

How does the body's condition change during sleep?

The doctor said that when we sleep, our body goes from active mode (sympathetic) to rest mode (parasympathetic). This change is beneficial for normal people, but for those who already have heart disease, this condition can cause slow heart rate (bradycardia), low blood pressure, and irregular breathing. This happens especially when a person is in deep sleep i.e. REM sleep.

Sleep apnea increases the risk

He said that sleep apnea is also a similar condition in which a person's breathing stops repeatedly during sleep. Due to this, the oxygen level in the body starts decreasing. Due to which blood pressure suddenly increases. This puts pressure on the heart and can gradually cause heart weakness or heart failure . The biggest thing is that this problem often remains undetected.

water changes in the body when lying down

Apart from this, when a person lies down, especially if his heart is already not functioning properly, the fluid accumulated in the legs starts moving towards the upper part of the body. This can cause problems like fluid filling in the lungs, shortness of breath and pressure on the heart. This is why many heart failure patients complain of waking up at night or suddenly feeling short of breath. In medical terms, this is called Paroxysmal Nocturnal Dyspnea.

What to do?

  • Keep blood pressure under control
  • Get tested for sleep disorders such as sleep apnea
  • Take heart medicines on time and improve your lifestyle
  • Maintain proper sleeping posture, keep the head slightly elevated so that the fluid does not move towards the chest
  • Eat light food before sleeping at night
  • Drinking excess water should also be avoided
