News Topical, Digital Desk : The US is currently in the grip of a devastating winter storm. The powerful winter storm has already led to the cancellation of more than 1,800 flights, disrupted travel in several areas, and caused power outages across the country amid bitter cold.
A winter storm brought heavy snowfall to Central America. Heavy snowfall, along with heavy rain, hit northwestern Texas and Oklahoma City on Friday morning local time. So far, 15 states have declared states of emergency due to the heavy snowfall, power outages, and dangerous cold.
Heavy snowfall likely
According to the NWS forecast, heavy snowfall is expected from Oklahoma to the Northeast, where some locations could receive more than a foot of snow by Monday. In addition, widespread freezing rain and sleet are expected across the Southern Plains, the lower Mississippi Valley, the Tennessee Valley, and the Southeast.
The storm will produce heavy snow accumulations, which could cause localized catastrophic conditions, including prolonged power outages, widespread tree damage, and extremely dangerous or impassable travel conditions. The storm could affect approximately 180 million people.
The effect will be visible for several days
According to Reuters, this winter storm could last for several days. It will now move toward the densely populated Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states, disrupting daily routines. Snow and ice produced by this storm will spread over more than 2,000 miles from Texas to New England. It will bring icy winds and cold across the country.
Snowfall and strong winds have severely impacted major airports and regional airports in the southern, eastern, and central regions of the United States. More than 1,800 flights have already been canceled, according to the website FlightAware.
Increased sales of essential commodities
Americans affected by the winter storm are frantically shopping for essential items ahead of its arrival. Many grocery stores in Mississippi, Texas, and Washington, D.C., have run out of supplies due to the storm-induced shopping spree, making even essential items like water and milk unavailable.
