Hanoi: Typhoon Yagi has wreaked havoc in northern Vietnam. The resulting landslides and flash floods destroyed an entire village. 155 people have died, while 141 are missing. Hundreds are reported injured.

Flood buried 35 families under debris

Floods in Lao Cai province buried the village of Lang Nu, home to 35 families, in mud and rubble on Tuesday. Only about a dozen have been reported to have survived so far. Rescuers have recovered 30 bodies. Yagi is the most powerful typhoon to hit the Southeast Asian country in decades. It made landfall on Saturday with winds of up to 149 kilometers per hour.

Rivers are in spate due to heavy rains

Despite weakening on Sunday, heavy rains continue and rivers remain at dangerous levels. Van A Po, a tour guide, said many roads in the province are blocked due to landslides and continuous rain. The weather has forced them to limit travel and all trekking is suspended.

Tourism is a major engine for the local economy. Nguyen Van Luong, who works at a hotel, said he could not return home because the 15-kilometer road to his village was too dangerous to drive on.

The bridge over the Red River collapsed

Earlier on Monday, a bridge over the swollen Red River collapsed in Phu Tho province, sending 10 cars and trucks, along with two motorcycles, into the river. A landslide in mountainous Cao Bang province swept a bus carrying 20 people into a flooded stream.
