Bangkok: Two journalists have been killed by the Myanmar military. One was reportedly killed after being captured when security forces raided the home of one of them in the southern state of Mon.

The journalists killed by security forces included freelancers Win Htut and Htet Myat, working for the Democratic Voice of Burma. DVB described the two as close friends.

Murders have been committed before

Five other media workers have been killed and others tortured in custody before this. Shaun Crispin, Southeast Asia representative of the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, said the killing of the two journalists was an atrocity against the free press.

He said Myanmar authorities must ensure speedy and full justice for the country's independent journalists. According to the France-based group Reporters Without Borders, Myanmar ranks near the bottom in the 2024 World Press Freedom Index. It ranks 171st out of 180 countries.
