Brazil is set to ban the entry of Asian citizens who use the South American country to migrate to the United States and Canada, the Justice Ministry's press office said Wednesday.
According to an official document, more than 70 percent of asylum requests at the airport come from people of Indian, Nepalese or Vietnamese nationality. The remaining 30 percent of asylum seekers are from Somalia, Cameroon, Ghana and Ethiopia.
Currently exempt from Brazilian visa
The move, which takes effect on Monday, will affect immigrants from Asian countries who need visas to stay in Brazil. It does not apply to people from Asian countries who are currently exempt from Brazilian visas. US citizens and many European citizens also do not need visas for Brazil.
