News Topical, Digital Desk : 637 people, including 41 police officers, were killed in mob lynching incidents in Bangladesh from August 2024 to July 2025. This is the largest number of extrajudicial killings in the country's recent history.

A Canadian agency report said that Bangladesh has seen a rise in mob violence since the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was removed from office. The Canada-based Global Center for Democratic Governance said in the report, "51 mob lynching deaths were recorded in 2023 under the Sheikh Hasina-led government. The current figure has increased more than 12 times compared to 2023."

What did the report say?

The report said that on August 4, 2024, 24 people were burnt to death at 'The Jabir Jashore Hotel' in Jashore. On August 25, 2024, 182 people were burnt to death at Gazi Tyres in Rupganj, Narayanganj.

According to the report, the names and details of the victims were not published. The agency said that due to strong media censorship they could not collect complete information on all deaths in mob lynching and stressed that the list should be considered incomplete.

Increase in incidents of mob lynching

This rise in incidents of mob lynching underlines the political instability and law and order situation. The collapse of a long-standing regime has created a power vacuum and a crisis of public confidence in the country's justice system.

Court systems were paralyzed by overstretched police forces, and local leaders were either targeted or in hiding. Citizens took justice into their own hands.
