Beijing: At least 30 people were killed and 35 were still missing after rain and storms caused by Typhoon Gaemi in southern China last week , state-run news channels reported on Thursday.
The dead and missing were from Jixing city in Hunan province, CTV reported. Extreme weather caused by the most powerful tropical cyclone to hit China this year affected nearly 90,000 people, damaged about 1,400 houses and damaged about 1,300 roads, the People's Daily reported earlier this week.
Life returns to eight towns in Jixing city
Jixing has received record rainfall since Friday, with 24-hour rainfall exceeding 645 mm (25.3 inches) at one location. On Thursday, state broadcaster CCTV said roads, power and communications had basically reopened in eight towns in Jixing city hardest hit by Typhoon Gaemi.
