News Topical, Digital Desk : In today's digital age, smartphones, tablets, computers and TV have become an important part of our daily lives. Children also use these devices for online classes, gaming and entertainment. However, the blue light emitted from them can be harmful to children's eyes and overall health (Blue Light Side Effects).
Yes, these electronic devices emit blue light, which if not taken care of, can harm the eyes, especially the eyes of children. Let's know from Dr. Namrata Mehra (Assistant Consultant, Ophthalmology, Max Hospital, Gurugram) how blue light harms children's eyes and what to do to avoid it (Tips to Protect Kid's Eyes).
Why is blue light harmful?
- Eye strain – Looking at a screen for long periods of time can cause eye fatigue , dryness, and irritation.
- Sleep disturbance – Blue light reduces the melatonin hormone, which disturbs sleep patterns.
- Vision problems – Long-term exposure can increase the risk of myopia and retinal damage.
Tips to protect children's eyes from blue light
- Reduce screen time- Children between 2 and 5 years of age should not be given more than 1 hour of screen time every day. For older children too, set a limited time and ask them to take breaks in between.
- Follow the 20-20-20 rule- Looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes relaxes the eye muscles. This rule helps in reducing digital eye strain .
- Use blue light filter glasses or screen protectors- Blue light blocking glasses and screen protectors are available in the market. These protect the eyes from harmful rays.
- Adjust device brightness and contrast - Set the screen brightness to match the surrounding environment. Use night mode or a warm light filter at night.
- Stop using screens 1-2 hours before bedtime- Blue light suppresses the melatonin hormone, which affects sleep. Therefore, keep children away from mobile or TV before bedtime.
- Promote outdoor activities- Playing in natural light strengthens children's eye muscles. Make it a habit to play outside for at least 1-2 hours daily.
- Get your eyes checked regularly- It is important to get your children's eyes checked once a year. If your child complains of eye pain or blurred vision, consult a doctor immediately.
It is not possible to completely avoid blue light, as it has become a part of our daily life. However, by taking proper precautions we can reduce its side effects.
