What does the new research say?
This research involved over 9,000 adults, 37 of whom underwent clinical trials. The results were quite surprising. Those tested gained approximately 0.4 kilograms per month after stopping the medication, meaning many returned to their original weight within approximately 1.7 years.
After stopping newer GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide and tirzepatide, people have gained about 0.8 kg of weight per month. Experts say these drugs suppress appetite and balance the body's metabolism. Once these drugs are stopped, the body returns to normal.
It requires long-term treatment
Researchers say obesity is now a chronic condition that requires long-term treatment, similar to conditions like hypertension or diabetes . However, patients often discontinue these medications due to factors such as high cost and side effects. Weight regain after stopping medication demonstrates the need for ongoing care.
