However, caffeine consumed every day can be harmful for you. Recently, a shocking news related to this came to light. Christina Lackman, a 32-year-old woman living in Melbourne, died of caffeine overdose.
How much caffeine is safe?
According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), up to 400 mg of caffeine per day is generally safe for healthy adults. This means that there is no harm in drinking 4-5 cups of coffee or 10 cans of cola or 2 energy drinks daily . However, these guidelines are not for everyone. Factors such as body weight, health conditions, medications and sensitivities can alter the response to caffeine.
When can caffeine be harmful?
Although 400 mg of caffeine is considered safe, consuming too much can cause caffeine toxicity. According to the FDA, caffeine intake of about 1,200 mg can cause a person to have seizures due to caffeine toxicity. However, this toxicity is rarely caused by coffee alone.
Usually this can happen due to overdose of caffeine pills, powder or its supplements. In Christina's case, it was found that drinking coffee alone cannot provide so much caffeine to the body. One of her emails revealed that she had ordered caffeine pills on the day of her death.
