News Topical, Digital Desk : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma on Wednesday made a big claim on the issue of demographic change in Assam. CM Himanta has said that if the current growth rate in the state continues, then by the year 2041, the population of Muslims in Assam will be almost equal to that of Hindus. CM Himanta has also said that according to the 2011 census, out of 34 percent Muslims in Assam, 31 percent are those who had earlier settled in Assam.

What did CM Himanta say?

On his alleged statement that "Hindus will become a minority in Assam in 10 years", Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said- "This is not my view. This is the result of the census. Today, according to the 2011 census, 34% of the population in Assam is a minority. So, if you remove 3% indigenous Assamese Muslims, 31% of Muslims have migrated to Assam. So, if you make an estimate based on 2021, 2031 and 2041, you come to a situation of almost 50-50. So, this is not my view. I am only stating the statistical census report." CM Himanta said that the figures and the records of the previous census make it clear that a few years from now, the Muslim population in Assam will be almost 50 percent.

What was the population situation of Assam in 2011?

According to the census report of 2011, the population of Assam was 3.12 crores. In this, the Muslim population was 1.07 crores i.e. 34.22 percent.
