News Topical, Digital Desk : When India's Foreign Minister, S. Jaishankar, visited the United States in September, he had to travel approximately 670 kilometers by road. Four months later, a report has emerged on why India's Foreign Minister had to do so.
Why did Jaishankar travel by road in America?
A report released this week by the US State Department said that in September 2025, US security officials drove External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar 416 miles during a government shutdown and commercial flights were grounded.
India's Foreign Minister had a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in the US, but he had to travel by road due to the suspension of commercial flights.
The information about this visit of S Jaishankar was written by the US Diplomatic Security Service on December 30 and was made public on January 8.
Air travel in America was halted
The US lockdown halted air travel nationwide, and with flights unavailable, security officials opted for road travel.
Agents welcomed S Jaishankar at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge on the US-Canada border and began the seven-hour drive to Manhattan.
America released the report
US officials said in the report that this operation ensured that the UN meeting of India's Foreign Minister was held on time despite the shutdown.
The Diplomatic Security Service is part of the U.S. Department of State. It is responsible for the security of American diplomats and foreign officials.
