News Topical, Digital Desk : Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Wednesday reprimanded a man during a petition hearing after he called his brother to discuss an order passed in a case. The CJI said such actions would not be tolerated. He asked the caller's lawyer, "Why shouldn't contempt proceedings be initiated against your client?"
CJI Surya Kant reprimanded the person who called his brother
According to Live Law, the case pertains to two general category candidates from Haryana who converted to Buddhism to get admission in post-graduate medical course at Subharti Medical College in Uttar Pradesh under the Buddhist minority quota.
They produced minority certificates issued by sub-divisional officers. In January 2026, a bench headed by CJI Surya Kant expressed serious doubts about the veracity of these conversions.
Case of interference with medical admission order
In this case, the CJI stated that this could be a ploy to gain admission. The court ordered an investigation into these certificates. The petitioner belongs to the "Punia" caste.
When the petition was re-listed during the hearing of the case, the CJI asked the petitioners' lawyer, 'Do you know what your client's father has done?
"Or do I have to tell him in open court? He called my brother and told him how the CJI passed this order? Will he dictate to me?"
CJI warned of strict action against such behaviour
CJI Surya Kant further said, “You investigate and then withdraw the case yourself if the client is doing wrong. I know how to deal with such people.”
"You're threatening me! Don't you ever dare do that again. I've been dealing with people like this for the last 23 years."
He stated that there was no intention of transferring the case, even if necessary, but that strict action would be taken against such behavior. However, the petitioners' lawyer professed ignorance of the incident and apologized.
