The reason behind this plane crash that took the lives of more than 270 people is still not known. The responsibility of investigating the plane crash has been handed over to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).

Formation of AAIB
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) was formed in 2012. The Civil Aviation Ministry of the Central Government formed AAIB under Annex-13 of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The headquarters of AAIB is located in Udan Bhawan at Safdarjung Airport in Delhi.
What does AAIB do?
AAIB investigates all types of plane accidents. During this, the team of experts of AAIB collects evidence of the accident and prepares a detailed report on it. This report contains not only the cause of the accident but also suggestions to avoid accidents in future. AAIB submits this report to DGCA, on the basis of which DGCA issues guidelines for all airlines.
How will AAIB investigate the Ahmedabad plane crash?
AAIB has started investigating the Ahmedabad plane crash. After the plane crash, the AAIB team recovered the black box from the spot. Also, the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder are also with the AAIB. AAIB will decode all these things. Apart from this, after the plane crash, AAIB also collects the statements of eyewitnesses present at the spot, on the basis of which AAIB will prepare the complete report.

AAIB investigated Air India accidents 3 times
Before the Ahmedabad plane crash, Air India had come under the scanner of AAIB thrice due to plane accidents.
1. Kozhikode accident - Air India flight IX-1344 skidded off the tabletop runway in Kozhikode. On 7 August 2020, the flight carrying 190 passengers skidded off the runway and fell into a 30 feet deep ditch, killing 21 people and seriously injuring many passengers.
2. Engine fire - Air India flight A320-ATF also met with an accident on 18 May 2024. While flying from Bengaluru to Kochi, one of the engines of the plane caught fire.
3. Attempt to take off from taxiway - On 5 December 2024, Air India flight A320-VT-EXT tried to take off from the taxiway instead of the runway. However, ATC immediately swung into action and cancelled the flight and the investigation was handed over to AAIB.
