News Topical, Digital Desk : Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chose an unusual airspace to address the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, avoiding the airspace of European countries where he could be detained due to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

In November 2024, the ICC issued warrants against Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister, Yoav Galant, for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, charges Israel vehemently denies.

His official aircraft, the "Wings of Zion," bypassed most European airspace on Thursday, taking a route that only skirted Greece and Italy. This route was about 600 kilometers longer than the usual route through Central Europe.

Fear of ICC warrant

Several ICC member states, such as Ireland and Spain, have made it clear that they will arrest Netanyahu if he enters their territory. France, on the other hand, said it would not detain them, while Italy questioned the possibility. Israel had requested permission to use French airspace, though we don't know for sure.
