News Topical, Digital Desk : Many people consider their day incomplete without morning tea and biscuits. Due to this habit, we Indians are consuming more sugar than required, which is a matter of concern for health.

What is the best alternative to sugar?

Most importantly, stevia doesn't raise blood sugar or insulin levels, making it completely safe for diabetics. Unlike sugar, it doesn't have any adverse effects on teeth. Because it's much sweeter than white sugar , only a small amount is needed. Dr. Kumar says it can be used daily in tea and coffee.

What is Stevia after all?

Stevia is a zero-calorie sweetener . It's made from the leaves of the South American plant Stevia Rebaudiana. Indigenous people have used it for centuries to sweeten tea and medicines, but it's only in the last few decades that it's gained popularity worldwide as a healthy alternative to white sugar.

"I prefer my tea and coffee without any sweetener, but I know that many people find it difficult to drink weak tea or coffee," says the doctor, so stevia is a safe option for them.

Only 6 teaspoons of sugar are allowed per day

The World Health Organization recommends that adults and children limit their sugar intake to less than 10% of their total energy intake. The WHO suggests that keeping it below 5% (about 25 grams or 6 teaspoons per day) provides the greatest health benefits, but due to hidden sugars in snacks and drinks, most Indians exceed this limit, increasing the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and neurological problems.
