News Topical, Digital Desk : Vodafone Idea (VI Share Price) is keen to work with the Department of Telecommunications to resolve the AGR dues matter after getting relief from the Supreme Court. "The Supreme Court today permitted the Government of India to consider the grievances of Vodafone Idea Limited on AGR related issues," the debt-ridden telecom company said in an exchange filing on Monday.

He further said, "We look forward to working closely with the Department of Telecommunications to resolve this matter in the interest of our nearly 20 crore customers."

On Monday (October 27, 2025), the Supreme Court allowed the government to reconsider Vodafone Idea's billions of dollars in past dues, rekindling hopes for the revival of Vodafone Idea, once India's largest telecom company. This was only after the Centre took equity in the company in lieu of debt, in the interest of its 200 million customers.

How much AGR dues does Vodafone Idea have?

As of today, Vodafone Idea's AGR dues stand at ₹83,400 crore. Including penalties, interest, spectrum and license fees, the total debt is approximately ₹2 lakh crore.

Any significant debt reduction would be a lifeline for Vodafone Idea, which hasn't reported a quarterly profit since 2016, when Vodafone India Private Limited merged with Aditya Birla Group's Idea Cellular Limited. That was a result of industry-wide consolidation triggered by Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, which began operations that year offering free voice and data.

Vodafone Idea has argued that the burden of AGR dues threatens its survival and it “cannot operate beyond FY2026” without relief.

On 6 October Bloomberg News reported that the government was considering a one-time settlement for Vodafone Idea, although Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia later indicated that the government was not considering increasing its stake in Vodafone Idea beyond the current 49%.
