News Topical, Digital Desk : A prominent US Senator has expressed concern over the continued suppression of religious freedom in Pakistan and the government's discriminatory policies against minority groups.
The report 'Alleys of Fear: Freedom of Religion or Belief in 2024/25' released by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) in August highlighted cases of such repression against minority groups, particularly Ahmadis, Hindus and Christians.
Incidents with Hindu and Christian girls on the rise
A report released earlier this year by Pakistan's top human rights body found a worrying rise in violence against religious minorities, including rape, forced conversions and child marriages of Hindu and Christian girls.
The senator expressed concern about this
"The Pakistani government continues to implement blasphemy laws and other discriminatory policies to suppress religious freedom for minority groups," Senator Jim Risch, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in an internet media post on Tuesday.
The report states that there has been a rise in the incidence of mob lynching of minorities on charges of blasphemy. Expressing concern over such incidents, Rich said, "A climate of intolerance against minority groups, including mob violence, hate speech, arbitrary arrests and rapes, and forced conversions, often continues unchecked."
