News Topical, Digital Desk : The US attacked an alleged drug smuggling boat off the coast of Venezuela, killing four people. US Defense Secretary Pete Hagseth gave this information on Friday. He said that the attack took place in international waters and the boat was on its way to deliver drugs to the US.
The Defense Secretary shared a video on the social media platform X, showing a boat speeding through waves before suddenly becoming engulfed in smoke and fire. Hagseth wrote that four narco-terrorists on the boat were killed. He said such attacks will continue until the drug menace on the American people is eradicated.
Cartels declared terrorist organizations
President Donald Trump's administration stated in a notice to Congress that the US is now engaged in armed conflict with drug cartels. The cartels have been designated terrorist organizations. However, experts say such attacks constitute unlawful killing, even if the target is a drug trafficker.
The White House said the legal requirement was to send notice to Congress after the attack. Trump's communications director celebrated the attack, saying deadly drugs and traffickers were now stardust.
Colombia said it was a murder
Colombian President Gustavo Petro criticized the US attack. He said that the real drug lords live in the US, Europe, and Dubai, while the boatmen were poor Caribbean youths. He wrote that boats can be seized, but blowing them up violates legal principles and amounts to murder.
