News Topical, Digital Desk : Thousands of people may soon lose their jobs at the United Nations (UN). The United Nations Secretariat is preparing to cut its $3.7 billion budget by 20 percent and cut about 6,900 jobs.
How much money does America owe the United Nations
In addition to cuts to U.S. foreign aid during President Donald Trump’s tenure, U.N. humanitarian agencies have been hurt, with the U.S. owing the UN about $1.5 billion for the fiscal year.
U.N. Comptroller Chandramouli Ramanathan did not cite U.S. failure to comply. He said the cuts were part of a review launched in March called "UN80."
When will the cuts take place?
Ramanathan said, “This is an ambitious effort to ensure that the United Nations is fit for purpose to support the 21st century, alleviate human suffering and build a better life and future for all.” He further said, “I count on your support for this collective effort which has been recognized with an aggressive timeline.”
Regarding transfer of employees
The job cuts will take effect from January 1, the start of the next budget cycle. In a public briefing to UN diplomats this month, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was considering a major overhaul that would merge key departments and transfer resources around the world.
He said the UN could consolidate some agencies, reduce others, transfer staff to cheaper cities, and eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy.
