News Topical, Digital Desk : US lawmakers have warned that the Iran conflict is weakening America's strategic position. Senior Democrats have said that resources needed to confront China and other major threats are being diverted to distant locations.
Ro Khanna, ranking member of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, said President Donald Trump's actions could weaken America's deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region. "President Trump's irresponsible war in Iran is putting America's security and economy at risk. The United States should focus on meeting the growing challenge of maintaining peace and stability in the Pacific," Ro Khanna said.
He said the administration is weakening our armed forces through unnecessary intervention in the Middle East . Ro Khanna also pointed to the financial and economic strain of the conflict. He said, "This war is costing taxpayers nearly a billion dollars a day and depleting vital ammunition. This kind of spending is not temporary, and Americans are already feeling the effects of rising gas prices and economic uncertainty."
He criticized the administration's policy of reaching out to Beijing, warning that it could damage alliances. "Now the president is asking China to send warships to end a war he himself cannot finish," Ro Khanna said. "This is a dangerous move that could weaken the alliances that form the backbone of our deterrence."
At a separate House Armed Services subcommittee hearing, Representative Seth Moulton offered a stark assessment of the broader security threats posed by the conflict. "We cannot ignore the fact that as we sit here today, America is at greater risk than ever before, whether in the Middle East or at home," Moulton said. He argued that continued military operations are draining resources and emboldening adversaries.
"Fourteen months after taking office, the President of Peace has attacked seven countries and, through these chosen battles, has exhausted scarce ammunition and emboldened both China and Russia," he said.
Moulton also pointed to growing concerns about the economic impact. He said, " With the Strait of Hormuz closed and oil prices soaring, Trump is actually losing the war, and the costs are being paid for with the lives of brave young American soldiers, as well as children and innocent civilians."
The lawmaker warned that US strategic focus is shifting away from critical long-term threats. "With everything going wrong in the Middle East, it's easy to lose focus on America's strategic defense, but it is the foundation of our national security and must remain a top priority," he said.
He highlighted growing concerns about China's military capabilities. "The Chinese Communist Party's ICBM fleet is exceeding US intelligence estimates, and they have deployed several hypersonic weapons that can deliver nuclear warheads," Moulton said.
He also pointed to threats from Russia, warning that Moscow has developed a treaty-violating, space-based nuclear weapon that could destroy all the satellites we rely on every day for GPS and communications.
The two lawmakers stressed that continued engagement in the Middle East could undermine America's readiness to confront global threats, particularly in Asia, where competition with China is growing. These statements come at a time when the Iran conflict dominates US foreign policy and concerns have grown in Washington about resource overspending and strategic divergence.
