News Topical, Digital Desk : US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the Trump administration hopes to "correct" the "steps" taken by India regarding its purchase of oil from Russia.

"I think it's important for Europe to impose sanctions as well," Rubio said in an interview with NBC's Today on Tuesday. “Right now, there are some countries in Europe that are still buying massive amounts of oil and natural gas from Russia, which is ridiculous. I mean, they're demanding more sanctions from the US, but they're not doing enough themselves.”

An additional 25 percent tariff has been imposed on India.

The Trump administration has imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on India's oil purchases from Russia, taking the total tariffs imposed by the US on India to 50 percent, the highest in the world.

Rubio said Trump has already expressed his "deep disappointment" with Russian President Vladimir Putin's direction of the conflict with Ukraine, even after a summit with him in Alaska in August.

Rubio meets Jaishankar

Rubio met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday during the high-level week of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly here. The meeting lasted about an hour. The meeting was the first in-person meeting between Rubio and Jaishankar in recent months, amid tensions between the two countries over trade, tariffs, and Delhi's energy purchases from Russia.

There will be no direct talks with the US on the nuclear issue: Khamenei

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Tuesday ruled out direct talks with the United States over his country's nuclear program. Khamenei's statement came as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is visiting New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

Khamenei's comments could limit Masoud Pezeshkian and prevent any potential dialogue with the US. Khamenei made the remarks in a speech broadcast on Iranian state television.

The comments came after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with European counterparts to seek to prevent the reimposition of nuclear sanctions. Khamenei said negotiations with the US were not possible.

Nuclear activities and enrichment have ceased

The US has already announced the outcome of the talks, which is that nuclear activities and enrichment have ceased. This is not a negotiation. This is a decree, an imposed order. Even before Khamenei's comments, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul had described the chances of an agreement with Iran as extremely low, reports the German news agency dpa.
