News Topical, Digital Desk : A Chittagong court on Monday approved the arrest of former ISKCON priest Chinmoy Krishna Das after the Bangladesh High Court granted him bail on sedition charges.

He has been arrested for the murder of Chittagong court lawyer Saiful Islam Alif last year. The lawyer was allegedly killed outside the court premises. The other three applications will be heard on Tuesday.

First arrested on charges of treason

Chinmay Das was arrested by the police at Dhaka airport on November 25 last year on charges of sedition. Earlier on April 30, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh stayed the High Court's order granting bail to Das in a sedition case. Appellate Division Judge Justice Rezaul Haque passed the order on an appeal filed a few hours after the High Court granted bail to Das.

Corruption probe begins against Sheikh Hasina's principal secretary

The crackdown against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's aides continues. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an investigation against her then principal secretary, Tofazzal Hossain Mia, on charges of acquiring illegal wealth through corruption and misuse of power.

ACC spokesman Akhtarul Islam confirmed the case but said no further details could be given. A senior official said the decision to launch an investigation was taken after the ACC intelligence unit found preliminary evidence of the allegations against Tofazzal.
