News Topical, Digital Desk : A case of spying on Chinese students in British universities has come to light. A report by Breitbart London has alleged that this work is being done at the behest of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The UK-China Transparency (UKCT) investigation surveyed academics in UK Chinese studies programs.

Students have to face interrogation by Chinese officials

Breitbart London claimed in its findings that Chinese students studying in the UK are being pressured by CCP authorities and police to gather intelligence on their classmates, academic discussions, and campus events.

Chinese students admit that there is surveillance everywhere

Chinese students reportedly acknowledged that there is surveillance everywhere and many face questioning by Chinese authorities upon returning home.

This is also being done to silence any mention of human rights abuses in Hong Kong, Tibet and Xinjiang in the debate, which Beijing considers shameful.

Chinese students are the primary source of spies

According to Breitbart London, Chinese students are the primary source of spies and they are in constant contact with local consulates. The report also alleges that Chinese diplomats and CCP-linked operatives have influenced China-related academic programs in the UK.

Reports of academics also being prevented from doing anti-China research

In some cases universities have reportedly shut down research projects altogether following direct pressure from the Chinese government.

The university relies on tuition from Chinese students

UKCT quoted one academic as saying that university management prevented him from carrying out politically sensitive research and warned this could jeopardise funding as the university relies on tuition from Chinese students.
