News Topical, Digital Desk : Chinese President Xi Jinping has issued a major statement. He called on global superpowers to "respect the development paths of other countries." This statement was a veiled attack on the US's sudden seizure of power in Venezuela and the kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro. China has long been a partner of Venezuela and its largest oil buyer.
According to Xinhua, Xi said, "Today the world is undergoing changes and turmoil not seen in a century, with unilateral and bullying actions seriously undermining the international order." President Xi Jinping's statement comes after his earlier criticism of the US attacks on Venezuela.
"All countries should respect the development paths freely chosen by the people of other countries, abide by international law and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and major powers in particular should take the lead in doing so," the Chinese president said during a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin.
The US action was described as a violation of international law.
China has repeatedly stated that Caracas has the right to engage in economic cooperation with other countries without external pressure. Previously, China also called on the United States to immediately release Maduro and his wife.
President Xi Jinping said he was "deeply shocked by and strongly condemns the US's flagrant use of force against a sovereign state."
China further said, 'This move is a clear violation of international law, basic norms of international relations and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.'
China–Venezuela relations
The fall of the Maduro government and the US operation are a major blow to China, as it had close strategic ties with Venezuela since the days of Hugo Chavez before Maduro.
China's strategic partnership with Venezuela over the past two decades was based on political rapport, energy cooperation, and shared opposition to US and Western influence in Latin America.
Meanwhile, China became a major buyer of Venezuelan oil, despite US sanctions. China is also Venezuela's major investor and lender, providing billions of dollars in loans in exchange for oil.
