News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump's administration has moved the Supreme Court to challenge the court's decision that declared most of its sweeping tariffs illegal. In court documents, the Trump administration has argued that these tariffs are an important aspect of our efforts for peace in Ukraine.

"The President recently authorized IEEPA tariffs against India for purchases of Russian energy products to address a pre-existing national emergency with respect to Russia's war in Ukraine, an important aspect of his effort to broker peace in that war-torn country," the administration said.

'Without tariffs, America would be a poor country'

On August 27, US President Donald Trump's administration doubled tariffs on India to 50 per cent. The filing states that with tariffs, the US is a rich nation and without them, it is a poor nation.

"According to the President, one year ago the United States was a dead country, and now, thanks to trillions of dollars in reparations from the countries that treated us so badly, America is a strong, economically viable, and respected country again," the filing said.

What decision did the American court give?

Last week, a US appeals court ruled that many of Trump's tariffs were illegal, but allowed the tariffs to remain in place to give the administration until mid-October to take it to the Supreme Court. The court also said the tariffs had hurt global trade.

The ruling affirmed a lower court’s finding that Trump had overstepped his authority by using emergency economic powers to impose the sweeping tariffs.

Trump criticized the court's decision

Trump strongly criticized this decision and posted on Truth Social that the appeals court is wrong in saying that our tariffs should be lifted, but he knows that ultimately the United States will win. He also said that he will oppose it with the help of the Supreme Court.
